"WE'VE MOVED" CARDS IN HOLIDAY THEME: WHO TO NOTIFY OF CHANGE OF ADDRESS
To help you through this busy move, we’ve put together a checklist of everywhere, and everyone you need to share your plans with.
1. The post office - Plan on notifying the post office as one of your first action items when you’ve moved, so they know to forward your mail. You can easily update your address with the post office online, and set up mail forwarding automatically. This way you don’t need to worry whether or not you’re receiving important mail.
2. Your work - Be sure to notify your employer when you move so they have a current address to send your tax forms or any other documentation.
3. Tax agencies - You should be able to update this one online. Simply go to your state’s government website. They should have directions to help you through the process. The IRS also has a few change of address forms on their website that can be downloaded and mailed in.
4. Your gas and electric company - In an effort to keep your monthly expenses in order, be sure to let your gas and electric company know you’ve moved, so you don’t get stuck paying for utilities on a house/apartment you no longer live in. Ideally, you should notify them as soon as you know what your new address will be and the date you are moving, so they can plan to cut off your utilities that day.
5. All other utilities - If you are responsible for the other utilities in your home (water, sewage, garbage, etc) be sure to notify those companies as well.
6. Department of Motor Vehicles - Depending on the state you are moving to/from, the window of time you have to alert the DMV of your new address may change. If you are lucky, alerting the DMV of an address change can be completed through a simple online address form.
7. Phone/Internet/Cable - These are all important because you may want to move them with you to your new home. Connect with your current cable or internet provider to find out if you have to return any equipment you are using, such as a cable box or modem. You might be able to take it with you to your new place, but you’ll definitely want to figure that out beforehand. Don’t forget to inform your cell phone provider, as they need to know where you live for billing purposes.
8. Home/Renters Insurance - Forgetting to switch your insurance could have huge consequences if something unfortunate were to happen. Be sure to contact your insurance agency prior to moving so they know where to transfer your policy to.
9. Financial Institutions/Loan providers - This one is pretty important because loan providers and banks need to be able to get in touch with you. This includes any loyalty cards you may have at specific stores. We may wish our bills couldn’t follow us, but it's important to stay up to date! You may also want to check this item off the list sooner in your moving process, just so you can be sure they have the right address and all paperwork is arriving there.
10. Clubs and organizations - Stay in touch with all your clubs and networks so they can continue to send important items to the right place. This also includes any memberships you may have like the gym, etc.
11. Subscription services - Remember to update all your magazines, subscription boxes, and monthly orders so they continue to go to the right address. You wouldn’t want to miss an exciting delivery because it went to the wrong house!
12. Friends and family - After notifying everyone else on the list, it can be easy to forget about those closest to you. Make this step easy by sending "we’ve moved" Christmas cards to everyone on your Christmas card list. You may even extend your normal holiday address list to inform more of your network of your new address. Another good idea when it comes to moving announcements is to send them before you actually move. As a result, friends and family that live nearby will have the opportunity to stop by and visit you at your old address before you relocate.
